Health and happiness come from within; you must first lay the foundation for these two things in your head before you begin to see them in your life. It’s tough to live that rom-com life when your mind is indiscernible from a horror film. Meditation is a great technique for creating a more peaceful mind. If you’ve had trouble getting into the mode of meditation recently, here are a few tips to get your mind back into the Zen mode you’re looking for.

  1. Bring yourself to the now: the present

Many people end up trying to problem-solve while they meditate. Others get caught up in the past, and other still find their heads falling down a rabbit hole of the cognitive variety. When you find yourself off on a trail of thinking, gently guide yourself to the present. Think, “Oh, right. I’m meditating. Better get back to that.”

  1. Thoughts are not the enemy; effort is.

Usually, a lack of effort is what bring you short of your goals. Not with meditation. Telling your mind to stop thinking is like telling your heart to stop beating. You’re going to think while you meditate, and that’s okay! What you don’t want to do is to use all your effort in pushing these thoughts away. Just acknowledge them and go back to your own thing.

  1. Keep on it!

Your brain is a like muscle: meaning that it gets stronger with practice. If you don’t see results right away, don’t give up. Eventually, with practice, you’ll be able to meditate perfectly.
